Deadline: July 31, 2022
Awarding Date: December 2022

The Problem:

Child mortality is a crucial measure of a child’s health and well-being and is still a significant worry. It is unacceptably high that 14,250 children die daily, equating to nearly 10 deaths each minute. Most of these deaths are due to preventable causes, with infectious illnesses and newborn complications accounting for the vast majority of deaths among children under the age of five worldwide. According to WHO and the Maternal and Child Epidemiology Estimation Group’s latest estimates, pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria were the leading causes of mortality among children under the age of five in 2019. Nutrition-related factors account for about half of all under-five mortality, and more than 80% of neonatal deaths occur among newborn children with low birth weights in the most burdened settings.
