The selection and evaluation of CUPB scholarships adheres to the principles of fairness, openness, and merit. Scholarship applications are only accepted from freshman in 2024 and later.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The applicant must be a foreign national who complies with legal requirements, be in good health, and have no criminal record. The applicant must meet the requirements set forth by their school for the admission of international students in order to be eligible to study in China;
  • Qualifications for language competency:

English-taught majors:

  • Candidates for undergraduate programs must provide proof of language competency at the required level, such as IELTS 6.0 or a TOEFL score of 75 or above. Strong command of the Chinese language is required of applicants.
  • Candidates must have an IELTS score of 6.5, a TOEFL score of 80 or above, or proof of acceptable language proficiency in order to be considered for graduate programs. Speaking Chinese well is beneficial;
  • Anticipations: Documentation of English language proficiency is not required of applicants from countries where English is the official language but rather of those who seek to apply for English-taught majors.

Chinese-taught majors:

  • Undergraduate program applicants must score at least 222 in HSK-4 Chinese proficiency.
  • Postgraduate program applicants must speak Chinese at least at the HSK-5 level.
  • To satisfy the age and degree requirements, candidates need to:
    • be a recent high school graduate who is under 25 and applying to undergraduate programs.
    • be under 35 years old and hold a bachelor’s degree in order to apply to master’s programs.
    • be under 45 years old and hold a master’s degree in order to apply to PhD programs.

Documents Requirement:

  • scanned copies of all pages from the passport (480 x 720, white background), the China arrival and departure record, and the China visa.
  • The best academic transcript and certificate, with an average score exceeding 70% (materials not in Chinese or English must have authorized translations into those languages).

  • Timetable for research and studies
  • Foreigner Physical Examination Form and Health Certificate (necessary laboratory report)
  • Confirmation that no criminal history exists
  • Two letters of recommendation (from an associate professor or above; required for postgraduate program admissions)
  • A supervisor’s acceptance letter (a supervisor’s letter of acceptance is necessary for Ph.D. applicants; master’s program applicants are encouraged to have one as well)

Important Notes:

  • Majors in any discipline at China University of Petroleum (Beijing) are eligible for this award; scholarship recipients are required to complete the annual assessment by the deadline. If students do not participate in the annual assessment for any reason, they will no longer be eligible for the scholarship.
  • The school reserves the right to deny scholarship awards to applicants who have been found to have committed fraud during the annual evaluation and selection process.
