Opportunity Description

ACONA, the Arms Control Negotiation Academy, is a 12-month program designed to provide top-notch professional development to a cohort of emerging international security experts and practitioners. The curriculum is selective and competitive. The comprehensive training program covers sophisticated negotiation techniques in the context of arms control, technological know-how, and critical historical case studies. In addition to joining ACONA’s network of future-generation arms control negotiators, participants receive a Certificate in Arms Control Negotiation.

ACONA Fellows attend expert lectures, intensive negotiating exercises, and small-group discussions with eminent scholars and practitioners throughout three week-long workshops, or “boot camps,” in addition to a conference. Previous speakers at ACONA included Catherine Ashton, the former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Katrín Jakobsdóttir, the Prime Minister of Iceland.

All boot camps and the conference are mandatory for ACONA Fellows. They also need to actively participate in discussions, work with a small group of fellows on an international research project, and present the project’s results by the conclusion of their 12-month fellowship. The fellowship pays for lodging and travel expenses to and from the last boot camp and conference in Iceland.
