  1. JPO – WHO Technical Officer: Child and Adolescent Health in Humanitarian Settings

The Junior Professional Officer (JPO) will work in the Child and Adolescent Health Unit (CAH) of the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean’s Department of Healthier Population. The JPO is anticipated to help enhance child and adolescent health programs in humanitarian circumstances, reporting to the Regional Adviser for CAH. S/he is required to contribute significantly to appropriately implementing the Regional Operational Guide for CAH in humanitarian situations in the target nations. They will be in charge of monitoring comments on the operating guide and revising it as needed. The JPO will collaborate closely with colleagues in the WHO department of health emergencies (WHE) to achieve synergy and consistency in WHO responses to children and adolescents in disaster-affected countries.

Responsibilities

The JPO will undertake the following tasks and responsibilities under the overall direction of the Regional Adviser, Child and Adolescent Health:

  • Assist the CAH unit in responding to a humanitarian emergency.
  • Help to create an interactive online version of the Regional Operational Guide for Child and Adolescent Health in Humanitarian Settings (CAHHS)
  • Update and maintain the interactive version of the Operational Guide for Child and Adolescent Health in Humanitarian Settings (CAHHS) based on user and stakeholder input and feedback.
  • Collaborate with WHE to develop a training package to support the country’s implementation of the Operational Guide for CAHHS.
  • Collaborate with WHE and related technical divisions to create an indication monitoring system for CAH in humanitarian contexts.
  • Hold introductory seminars at the national level to kick-start and scale up the execution of the operational guide.
  • Create reports to monitor the progress of CAH efforts in humanitarian circumstances.
  • Hold negotiations with various programs and partners to finalize the minimum child and adolescent health service package and emergency supply kits.
  • Carry out any additional responsibilities specified by the supervisor.

The Junior Professional Officer (JPO) will serve as a country team member to support WHO’s efforts in midwifery, encompassing sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (SRMNCH). The JPO will specifically support the implementation of the joint WHO-UNFPA-UNICEF-ICM 2019 “Framework for Action: Strengthening quality midwifery education for universal health coverage (UHC) 2030” in the context of improving quality of care through the global network for quality of care, which is actively led by the governments of Sierra Leone and Malawi.

  • With an MA, you must have a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years of relevant job experience, ideally in program management in the public or private sector at the national or international level, as well as expertise in data analysis and coordination.
  • Experience with gender, human rights, and humanitarian settings will be advantageous, especially in working with refugees, internally displaced persons, and civil society partnerships.
