Canada Pause Private Sponsorship of refugees Program

Canada Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced a temporary pause in accepting new refugee sponsorship applications under its Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) Program from groups of five and community sponsors. This pause addresses the growing backlog of applications and extended processing times caused by unprecedented demand.

The PSR Program, celebrated globally as a model of refugee support, has provided hope and new beginnings to countless refugees for over 40 years. However, the increasing number of sponsorship requests has exceeded the available spaces under Canada’s immigration levels plan, leading to a substantial and growing application inventory.

To ensure more predictable and efficient processing for both sponsors and refugees, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced this temporary measure, effective November 29, 2024. The pause will remain in place until December 31, 2025.

While new applications are on hold, IRCC will continue processing existing applications to meet the PSR Program’s annual targets. For 2025, the goal is to welcome 23,000 privately sponsored refugees to Canada.
