UK Resumes Chevening Scholarships for Afghan Students After Months of Suspension
After a suspension of several months, the UK has resumed offering Chevening scholarships for Afghan students.
In the official announcement of Chevening about UK’s Chevening scholarship, stated that Afghan applicants can apply for a master’s degree in the UK from November 14, 2024, to January 2, 2025.
The scholarship program had been suspended for Afghan students since September this year and students from inside Afghanistan were not able to apply to this scholarship.
The entry of the Taliban into Kabul in August 2021 had a significant impact on the Chevening scholarship program for Afghan students.
Although Afghan students could no longer process their UK study visas from Kabul after the Taliban takeover, they had the option to travel to neighboring countries like Pakistan and Iran to complete the Chevening application and administrative procedures.
However, this process was halted in September this year. A group of Afghan Chevening alumni had previously written to the UK government, requesting the lifting of the scholarship suspension for Afghanistan.
According to information on the Chevening website, Afghan students can now apply for the scholarship directly from Afghanistan.
The Chevening program, typically funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, provides outstanding students from around the world the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree in the UK each year.
