This decision is in response to the Taliban’s ban on Tuesday on women attending universities in Afghanistan with immediate effect. The ban raised condemnation and protests in the country and globally. Before, the Taliban had further restrictions on women’s education in Afghanistan that have already stopped girls and excluded them from secondary schools since the Taliban returned to power in Kabul in August 2021.

FutureLearn Chairman Jo Johnson said, “For female students, including girls and women who have access to the internet and afford the time, this could be a lifeline.” According to Johnson, poor internet connectivity, language barriers, and poverty may cause many women and girls to be unable to access the material. Nonetheless, they will play a valuable role in enabling women in the country to assert their absolute human right to education.

The High Representative of the European Union, Foreign Ministers of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, the U.K., and the U.S. strongly condemned the Taliban’s recent decision in a joint statement on 21 December 2022.
