According to a news report by Deutsche Welle (DW), The US Department of Homeland Security has announced that the process of applying for a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) will be simplified for the people of Afghanistan. From now on, applicants can apply for this type of visa by filling out and sending a form.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a joint statement that applicants do not need a special immigration introduction letter starting this week. “This new process will help remove barriers for applicants and speed up the process,” the statement said. Their goal is to make the “SIV” program more efficient and the application process less time-consuming.
Thousands of people have applied for a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) since the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. There are over 74 thousand principal applicants who are in SIV pipeline. SIV is a visa for those who have worked with the US in the two decades of its presence in Afghanistan.
The department state said to CNN: “SIV process will be done faster and they will eliminate one/two forms for most new applicants”.
“Starting this week, new Afghan SIV Program applicants will only need to file a revised form DS-157, as their SIV petition. they will no longer need to file the Form I-360, Petition for Special Immigrant Status, with DHS’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). CNN
